Giovanni Muzzioli “Abraham and Sarah at Pharaoh’s Court”

The painter Giovanni Muzzioli shows great skill in rendering the moving glance between Abraham and Sarah, after the couple had sought refuge in Thebes, unaware that Pharaoh was watching them, thinking them siblings. The biblical scene depicted by the painter is set in a small courtyard, rendered with warm colours and somewhat oriental features. This work is an admirable demonstration of his skills, presented as second-year coursework at the Pensionato Poletti academy in 1875 and exhibited at the Triennial Show of the Società d’Incoraggiamento (Arts Society) of Modena.
