On entering this hall, visitors are immediately struck by the murals painted by Nicolò dell’Abate in 1546. The iconographic series conceived by the humanist Lodovico Castelvetro celebrates the Roman origins of the city using episodes from the War of Modena according to the version provided by the Alexandrine historian Appian. The cycle begins with the Siege of Modena and ends with the establishment of the Second Triumvirate, creating a connection in time and space between the Roman Mutina of the triumvirs and Renaissance Modena, governed by the Conservatori of the “Magnifica Comunità” who met seated on the wooden benches below, today moved to the adjacent Sala del Vecchio Consiglio.
