Ludovico Lana “Saint Geminianus interceding to end the plague”

The large canvas of Saint Geminianus interceding to end the plague by Ludovico Lana was completed in 1633 as a standard to be carried during processions. Saint Geminianus, patron of Modena, begs for the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, who blesses the city, accurately depicted at the foot of the painting. The standard was painted with the same image on both sides and was to be carried during the annual solemn procession that set out from the Cathedral and ended at the Church of San Domenico. Only in the second half of the 18th century was the work transformed into a painting and hung in this chamber above the benches of the Conservatori.
