The bell of Guido Modena

The 14th century bell once housed at the top of the tower can today be seen in the district headquarters in Piazza Redecocca. An inscription reveals its maker –Guido de Mutina me fecit– preceded by an engraved cross and followed by a bell and the year in which it was cast in Roman numerals: MCCCX, or 1310. Successive earthquakes in the 16th and 17th centuries forced the city authorities to demolish the part of the tower housing the heavy bell and move it to the remaining section, where it stayed until the second half of the 19th century, when it was displayed in the Civic Museum.
