Venceslao Bigoni, Grandfather's Hat

A sparsely furnished room is the setting for this humble family scene in which a grandfather tries to place his black hat on the head of his grandson, while the child’s mother, probably the old man’s daughter, smiles lost in thought. This rendering of a scene from everyday life was acquired for the collection of the Civic Museum in 1885, a year after it was painted, on the occasion of the VII Triennial Show of the Società d’Incoraggiamento (Arts Society) of Modena.
