“Tobias heals the blindness of his father”

This biblical scene dating from 1843 is a wonderfully poetic rendering of a moment of affection. The painting has been housed in this public space since 2010, on permanent loan by its owner. In 1835, Adeodato Malatesta was commissioned by the Countess Teresa Bertolini Cataldi in Boschetti to paint this work for the main hall of the Villa Buonafonte in Collegara. The painter gave considerable thought to the composition of the work and eventually abandoned traditional models to adopt the Purist approach he had learned in his time in Rome. The biblical scene shows how Tobias, on returning from his travels to the city of Media, administers a miraculous medicine made of gall to his blind father, restoring his sight. Malatesta chooses to set the scene outside of the family home, surrounding the main figures with eager onlookers.
